Cossus cossus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Cossus cossus

The caterpillars feed in the trunks and branches of a wide variety of trees but mostly Salix, taking three or four years to mature. In mass occurrences of the caterpillar, it can happen that the tree doesn't survive. In Norwegian it's called the treekiller!
