Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller were two Austrian naturalists mainly focused on Lepidoptera. Denis, a Jesuit priest and Professor at the Theresianum College, published together with Schiffermüller, also a teacher at the same College in Vienna, the first index of the Lepidoptera of the Viennese region.

Together they also formed an early collection of butterflies and moths, which unfortunately were lost during the Austrian Revolutions of 1848.

(Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) refers to das Systematische Verzeichnis der Schmetterlinge der Wienergegend herausgegeben von einigen Lehrern am k. k. Theresianum published in 1775. A online Digital Copy is available @ Uni Düsseldorf
