In comparison to the Panorpa communis, the hind wings show no continuous black band, only spots.

The P. germanica, which is know from most of Europe is, according to Fauna Europaea, split up into 7 subspecies. Six of those subspecies mostly resides on and around the Balkan Peninsula.
